How is my phone line qualified for DSL service?

To "qualify" your phone line for DSL service, Qwest checks for characteristics that may affect DSL reception to determine:

  • Whether or not your phone line is served by Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) equipment. DLC equipment is used to meet demand in high growth and suburban areas and is currently incompatible with DSL service.
  • If the telephone wire between the Qwest central office and your premises is longer than 15,000 feet. Wire length will ultimately determine your data transmission speed and is not technically feasible at distances over 15,000 feet. Note: 15,000 feet means the length of your phone wire, not the physical distance between your location and the Qwest office. Other factors such as temperature, wire gauge and wire condition may affect service as well.
  • Wire testing may reveal the presence of bridge taps, wire gauge changes or load coils on your phone line. These devices are used to condition lines for higher quality voice signals. Currently, they negatively impact DSL data transmission
