Modem Issues

BTInet does not guarantee that the following steps will correct the problem(s) you may be having but simply provides some troubleshooting steps that you can follow to try to correct the problem. Try doing one step then try the connection. If the connection has not improved try the next step then try the connection again. And continue this process for the following steps.

  1. Try adding 2 or 3 commas to the end of the phone number in the dialer
  2. Disable the area code in the dialer
    1. Double click My Computer
    2. Double click Dial-Up Networking
    3. Right click BTInet dialer
    4. Click Properties
    5. Remove the check mark from the option that says "Use area code and dialing properties"
  3. Disable the connection timeout
    1. Double click My Computer
    2. Double click Dial-Up Networking
    3. Right click the BTInet dialer
    4. Click Properties
    5. Click the Configure button
    6. Click the Connection tab at the top
    7. Remove the check from the option that says "Cancel the call if not connected within X seconds"
  4. Lower the Maximum speed of the modem
    1. Double click My Computer
    2. Double click Dial-Up Networking
    3. Right click the BTInet dialer
    4. Click Properties
    5. Click the Configure button
    6. Lower the Maximum Speed to 38400 or 19200 by clicking the down arrow at the end of the box
  5. Lower the Transmit and Receive buffers
    1. Double click My Computer
    2. Double click Dial-up Networking
    3. Right click the BTInet dialer
    4. Click Properties
    5. Click the Configure button
    6. Click the Connection tab at the top
    7. Click Port Settings
    8. Lower both the Receive buffer and Transmit buffer all the way to low
  6. Change Flow Control to Software
    1. Double click My Computer
    2. Double click Dial-Up Networking
    3. Right click the BTInet dialer
    4. Click Properties
    5. Click Configure
    6. Click the Connection tab at the top
    7. Click the Advanced button
    8. Put the dot in Software, under Flow Control
    9. Click OK at the bottom
  7. Disable Error Control
    1. Double click My Computer
    2. Double click Dial-Up Networking
    3. Right click the BTInet dialer
    4. Click Properties
    5. Click the Configure button
    6. Click on the Connection Tab at the top
    7. Click on the Advanced button
    8. Take the check mark out of Use Error Control
    9. Click OK at the bottom of the screen
  8. Try changing the Modem Modulation type
    1. Double click My Computer
    2. Double click Dial-Up Networking
    3. Right click the BTInet dialer
    4. Click Properties
    5. Click the Configure button
    6. Click the Connection tab at the top
    7. Click the Advanced button
    8. Try changing the modulation type to Non-Standard
    9. Click OK to each of the open windows
    10. Try connecting again
