BTInet subscribers automatically get a free 10-megabyte Web site (example: http://www.btinet.net/~username). Additional space is available, up to 1-gigabyte, for an additional $5 per month. Contact us if you'd like additional Web space. Please review the Internet Usage Agreement/SLA for content and usage guidelines; this is the same agreement you abide by as a BTInet subscriber. Also refer to the "HTML Tutorials" links listed on our Development Resources page for assistance with setting up your site. If after following the steps below, you need help accessing your Web space, e-mail hostmaster@btinet.net.
All personal/small business Web sites hosted by BTInet will automatically be included with the search engines we're registered with. The registration is performed differently for each search tool, so your Web site may appear on some search engine sites more quickly than on others. If you want to register your Web site manually on multiple search engines, start with any of the resources listed on our Development Resources page.
In your FTP program, set up the log-in information for accessing your Web space as follows (terminology may vary by FTP program):
| Host Address: | ftp.btinet.net |
| Site User Name: | Your primary user name if you have more than one e-mail address (example: username@btinet.net). |
| Site Password: | The password assigned to your primary user name. |
| Default Remote Directory: | public_html/ (this is the folder that will hold your Web files, including your Web pages and images.) |
| Default Local Directory: (Optional) |
C:\My Documents\MySite\ (this is an example of the path to the folder on your computer where you store your Web files.) |
| Other Settings: | Most other settings in your FTP program can be left at their default setting, unless you have problems connecting, in which case you can contact hostmaster@btinet.net for assistance. |
Click on your FTP's "Connect" button to connect to the BTInet Web server. Your FTP program will display a message indicating when you are connected. It will also display your local Web files on your computer in one window and the Web server files in another window. Now using the FTP program's "Upload" button, transfer your files to the Web server into the "public_html" folder. That's it! Your site is up!
Remember: Name your home page (or a copy of it) as "index.htm" or "index.html" and put it in the "public_html" folder. That file will be your default home page for your Web site address. For example, if your user name is "username@btinet.net," your Web site address would be http://www.btinet.net/~username/. By entering that address in the browser address bar, the browser will automatically go to your index.htm page under the "public_html" folder, even though the "index.htm" may not show in the address bar.
